Music To Confront Your Mortality To
A playlist we did for i-D Magazine
For extra effect, I recommend pairing these songs with this writing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_far_future
Listen, I realize this might not be a popular topic, but sometimes, sometimes, it needs to be said. We are all going to die. I think about this from time to time, the thoughts “one of these days my body will cease to exist” and “I will know exactly what it’s like to die”. There are memories that stir these thoughts, there are films too, but the most effective will always be music. There is peace here, to confront these thoughts with the comfort of others, musicians who are unknowingly standing with me, pushing me along, keeping me company.
Much like the unpopularity of our collective fates, I understand that sentimentality sometimes can also be unpopular. But sentimentality and sentimental music has its time and place, wouldn’t you agree? While I can never get enough of Death Grips and Whitehouse and many like them, my favourite songs are the quiet ones. I don’t imagine the end being very noisy.
